What Is a Limo? Types, Sizes, and When to Book One

What is a limo: a stretch limousine, executive sedan, and SUV limo shown together to compare types
“Limo” covers everything from an executive sedan to a party bus. Here is how the types differ.
The short answer

A limo, short for limousine, is a chauffeur-driven luxury vehicle booked at a set price instead of a metered fare. The word covers five main types: executive sedans, stretch limos, SUV limos, party buses and specialty builds. What they share is a licensed driver, a premium interior and a price agreed before the ride.

People picture different cars when they hear “limo.” One pictures a long black stretch; another pictures the sedan that meets them at the airport. Both count. Below: each type, how many people it seats, and how a limo differs from a black car or a car service.

Limo definition

A limousine is any luxury vehicle driven by a professional chauffeur and booked at a fixed rate. Length is not part of the definition. Three things make a car a limo: a licensed chauffeur, a premium interior and a reservation at a set price. The name comes from Limousin, a region in France, where shepherds wore hooded cloaks that looked like the covered driver’s seat on early chauffeured cars.

Passenger counts vary by build. Confirm the exact vehicle and capacity when you book.

The executive sedan (a Mercedes S-Class or E-Class, for example) is the everyday limo: quiet, professional, ideal for two or three passengers and airport rides. The stretch limo is the iconic one, an extended body seating six to ten with a minibar, mood lighting, and a partition. SUV limos trade some glamour for space and luggage, which suits groups. Party buses are the largest, effectively a lounge on wheels for fourteen to twenty-five people. Hummer and specialty limos are built for a statement more than for practicality.

Limo vs black car vs car service

These three terms get mixed up constantly. Car service is the umbrella: any pre-booked, chauffeured ride at a set rate. Black car is the executive tier of car service, the premium sedans and SUVs used for business and airport travel; that is exactly what our Newark Airport black car service provides. Limo most often refers to the stretch and party vehicles, though people use it loosely for any chauffeured luxury car. In short: every black car is a car service, and both sit under the same roof as limos. The industry’s trade body, the National Limousine Association, represents chauffeured operators across all these vehicle types.

Which limo to book for each occasion

Match the vehicle to the trip. For an airport transfer or a business meeting, an executive sedan or SUV is the right call, which is what our Newark Airport limo service provides across Midtown Manhattan, Jersey City, and the Bergen and Essex County corridors. For a wedding or prom, the stretch limo earns its reputation. For a group night out or a winery tour, a party bus or SUV limo carries everyone in one vehicle. For recurring corporate travel, the sedan black-car tier fits better than a stretch.

What does a limo cost?

In the NYC and NJ area, an executive sedan costs about $75 to $150 an hour, a stretch $120 to $250, and a party bus $200 to $400 or more. Our Business Class Sedan is $95 an hour plus 15% gratuity and tax, with a 2-hour minimum ($237.89 all-in for the minimum), as of September 2026. Airport transfers are a flat rate instead. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a limo and a sedan?

A sedan is a body style. A limo is a service: a luxury car with a chauffeur, booked at a set price. So an executive sedan booked with a chauffeur counts as a limo. A stretch limo is a sedan or SUV lengthened to seat six to ten people.

How many people fit in a stretch limo?

Six to ten, depending on the build. Stretch SUVs seat up to 14. Party buses seat 14 to 25.

Is a party bus a limo?

Yes. A party bus is the largest type of limo, built for groups of 14 to 25, with wraparound seats, a sound system and lighting.

What is the difference between a black car and a limo?

Both are chauffeured and booked at a set price. Black car means executive sedans and SUVs, used mostly for business and airport trips. Limo usually means stretch and party vehicles for events.

Do limo drivers need a special license?

Yes. Chauffeurs carry commercial credentials, and in New York and New Jersey the company also needs state limousine registration and airport permits. An app driver assigned minutes before pickup is not the same thing.
