Princeton to Newark Airport (EWR)
Newark Liberty is the natural Princeton hub. United operates a major hub from Terminal C with the Star Alliance lineup, JetBlue and Spirit have meaningful Terminal A presence, and the Newark to Heathrow / Lisbon / Frankfurt nonstops cover most European Princeton academic travel. Drive time is 50 to 75 minutes door to terminal in normal traffic, longer at rush hour. The new Terminal A (opened 2023) is the cleanest of the three. From a Princeton pickup, EWR is the easiest airport to time around an early flight.
Pricing is the lowest among the four for a Princeton sedan. Princeton to Philadelphia (PHL): the underrated option
Philadelphia is closer than EWR in actual miles, about 45 versus 50, and the Princeton-to-PHL drive is a single shot down I-95 (now signed I-295 at the NJ end, then crossing the Commodore Barry into PHL). American Airlines operates a major hub there. If you’re heading to Charlotte, Phoenix, Miami, the Caribbean, or any AA codeshare, PHL is often the better pick than fighting through a Newark connection. Don’t let “EWR is the closest big NJ airport” myth keep you from looking at PHL.
The catch: PHL traffic patterns are less predictable than EWR’s. The Walt Whitman Bridge approach can back up around shift changes for the South Philly refineries. Our drivers know the workarounds (Commodore Barry plus the back way through South Philly’s Penrose Avenue) but allow extra time on a Friday afternoon. SEPTA does have an airport line from 30th Street, but for a Princeton traveler the train option to PHL is a 110-to-130-minute door-to-terminal undertaking with three transfers. Almost never the right call.
Princeton to JFK and LaGuardia (LGA)
JFK is 60 miles east of Princeton and the drive is 75 to 110 minutes depending on the BQE and the Cross Bronx, both of which are reliably bad most weekday afternoons. JFK’s value is the international flight set EWR doesn’t fly: Asia nonstops on Korean Air, Air China, Singapore, plus the JetBlue and Delta Caribbean flights that don’t depart from Newark. For a Princeton academic headed to a conference in Seoul, JFK might be the only sensible pick. Our drivers stage at JFK Terminal 4 or 7 most often.
LaGuardia is the niche pick at 70 miles and 80 to 120 minutes from Princeton. The new Terminal B (Delta and American renovated 2018-2022) is genuinely good now, and LGA has shorter security lines and easier ground transit on the New York side. For a Princeton family heading to a Detroit, Cleveland, or Charleston flight that doesn’t connect well through Newark, LGA can be the right call. The drive is the longest of the four, though. NJ Transit to LGA is functionally not a thing: three transfers and over 2.5 hours door to gate.

NJ Transit vs car service: Princeton airport transportation by the numbers
When the train is the right call from Princeton Junction, and when it isn’t
NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor line is the only transit option from Princeton that gets you to a Newark-area airport without three transfers. From Princeton Junction Station to Newark Liberty Airport Station is a 35-to-45-minute train ride, then a 5-to-15-minute AirTrain segment to your terminal. Off-peak fare is around $15.75 plus the AirTrain. Trains depart Princeton Junction every 20 to 30 minutes weekdays, every 30 to 60 minutes weekends. The train is a real option, not a fake fallback. The full door-to-terminal timing usually lands between 75 and 90 minutes for a Princeton traveler taking the train, once you factor in getting to the Junction (drive plus park, or shuttle), the train wait, the train ride, the Newark Penn or Newark Airport Station transfer to the AirTrain, the AirTrain itself, and the walk from the AirTrain stop to your terminal gate. A direct car service is 50 to 75 minutes for the same Princeton-to-EWR pair.
Princeton Junction parking is the gotcha
Daily parking at Princeton Junction is functionally limited. Permit lots are full long-term, daily parking is capped, and on a holiday travel weekend the West Windsor lot is full by 7 AM. We watched a Bloomberg analyst miss a 9:15 train on a Wednesday this past March because the lot circulation pattern dumped him onto Wallace Road for 12 minutes. If you’re planning to drive to the train, plan that piece carefully. The Princeton FreeB shuttle from downtown helps for some travelers, but doesn’t solve the Plainsboro / Cranbury commute side.
The AirTrain factor
The Newark Liberty AirTrain segment adds 15 to 25 minutes when it’s behaving. Port Authority broke ground on a new AirTrain in 2025, which means scheduled outages over a 28-month build period, with bus shuttles replacing the AirTrain on certain weekends and overnights. A car service drops you at your terminal door. The AirTrain replacement bus drops you at the AirTrain Newark station and you walk in. Worth checking the schedule before you commit to the train option.
The decision framework
Pick NJ Transit if all four of these are true: you’re solo or with one adult, you have a backpack or one carry-on (no checked bags), your flight is mid-morning or later (so the first peak Princeton Junction train works for your timing), and either you live within walking distance of the Junction or you have a confirmed parking arrangement. Otherwise, pick a private car service. Solo with checked bags? Car. Family of four? Car. Pre-7-AM flight? Car. Corporate office on Route 1 with a 5 AM Heathrow flight? Car, every time. For groups of 4 or more headed to EWR together, a Sprinter van transfer to Newark Airport handles everyone in one vehicle for less than four separate train tickets plus four AirTrain fares plus a Princeton Junction parking permit.
Uber and Lyft from Princeton
Uber and Lyft work from Princeton, with caveats. Driver availability gets thin between 11 PM and 5 AM in the Princeton area, and surge pricing during peak hours (early morning EWR trips, late Friday returns) regularly pushes the Princeton-to-EWR fare to $130 or higher.
