Which Vehicle Fits the Trip
The Business Class Sedan suits one to three business travelers with carry-on bags. Families with a stroller and car seats usually book the Comfort Van or Business Class SUV, since the SUV fits five people with five bags. The First Class Sedan and First Class SUV are a step up in vehicle class and include meet and greet at no charge. For a wedding party or team of up to 12, the Sprinter carries everyone and their bags in one vehicle. The full fleet page shows each vehicle.
Car Service vs Amtrak from Philadelphia to New York
When the Train Is the Better Choice
Acela reaches New York Penn Station from 30th Street in about 80 minutes. If you’re traveling alone with a small bag and your meeting is near Penn Station, the train usually costs less and saves time. Amtrak fares change with the train and how early you book, so check the fare before you decide.
When the Car Is the Better Choice
Groups change the comparison. One train fare per person adds up fast for a group of three or four, while the car price stays the same for everyone in it. The car also removes two transfers: getting to 30th Street, and getting from Penn Station to your hotel or office with bags.
Book the car when the trip includes children in car seats, heavy luggage, a pickup before the first train, an airport at either end, or a meeting far from Penn Station. It also helps when a train is canceled and you still need to be in New York on time.
How Long Does the Drive from Philadelphia to NYC Take?
Plan on about two hours door to door off-peak. Weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons can stretch the trip to two and a half or three hours. Most of the delay comes at the New York end, at the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
The usual route heads north on I-95 through Pennsylvania, onto the New Jersey Turnpike and into Manhattan through a Hudson River tunnel. Our Philadelphia to Newark Airport drive guide walks through the same corridor as far as Newark.
Car Service NYC to Philadelphia: The Reverse Trip
The trip south is quoted separately, and the price can differ a little from the northbound one. Enter both addresses on the booking page to see your exact price.
Where you start in Manhattan shapes the first half hour. Pickups in Midtown West usually leave through the Lincoln Tunnel. Pickups in Lower Manhattan usually take the Holland Tunnel, which backs up on Friday afternoons. From there the car takes the New Jersey Turnpike south and crosses into Pennsylvania on the way to Center City.

Airport Transfers Between Philadelphia and New York
Philadelphia to Newark Airport
Many travelers from Center City fly out of Newark for United’s nonstop and international flights. Our Philadelphia to Newark Airport car service page has prices for that trip, and why fly Newark vs PHL explains when Newark is worth the drive. To compare the train, bus and car side by side, see Philadelphia to EWR transportation options.
Philadelphia to JFK or LaGuardia
JFK is about three hours from Center City by car, and more at rush hour. The train is harder to use here because you still need a second ride from Penn Station to the airport with your bags. We quote JFK and LaGuardia trips on the booking page.
Starting in Manhattan
If you’re starting in Manhattan and flying out of Newark, see our Manhattan to Newark car service page or the Manhattan to Newark Airport travel guide.
Private Car Service vs Rideshare
A private car service means one booking per vehicle, a professional chauffeur and a price set when you book. App rideshare fares on a 95-mile trip change with demand, and drivers can turn down a long trip before sunrise. We don’t offer shared rides or shuttles. Every trip is private.
Pickups Outside Center City
We also pick up in the Philadelphia suburbs. Our Bucks County car service page covers Doylestown and New Hope, the Lehigh Valley guide covers Allentown and Bethlehem, and the King of Prussia and Main Line guide covers Wayne and Bryn Mawr. Enter your address on the booking page for a price to New York.
Before You Book
Your chauffeur waits 15 minutes at no charge at a home, hotel or office pickup, and 60 minutes after landing on airport pickups. Meet and greet service is available. Infant, convertible and booster seats are free on request; see our car service with car seats page for details. You get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before pickup. Inside 24 hours, the full fare is charged.
